Green Platform funding awarded to HyCarbon project

Through the Green Platform scheme, 73 MNOK of funding has been awarded to HyCarbon – Low Emission Hydrogen and Carbon Value Chains, a three-year innovation project led by NORCE in collaboration with industry and research partners. The project will develop and pilot new, low-emission value chains for hydrogen and solid carbon based on methane splitting technology.

HyCarbon aims to address key barriers to scalable hydrogen production by combining SEID’s plasma-based ColdSpark technology. This approach enables the production of low-emission hydrogen while capturing carbon as a valuable solid material for industrial use—reducing emissions and creating new circular value chains.

A central milestone is the establishment of a TRL7 pilot at the NORCE Test Centre Risavika, contributing to the development of the Risavika Hydrogen Hub as a platform for industrial testing and scale-up. The project will also explore applications of clean carbon in sectors such as silicon production, batteries, tyres and aluminium, replacing fossil carbon inputs.

The consortium brings together partners across the value chain, including NORCE, University of Stavanger, Institute for Energy Technology (IFE), SEID, Sustainable Energy Catapult, Aarbakke Innovation and Energy Transition Norway. Together, we will work to move promising technologies from laboratory to industrial readiness, supporting Norway’s green transition and strengthening regional innovation capacity.
