Battery waste is more than an environmental challenge – it is a strategic resource for Europe’s energy security.
The TH2ISTLE project aims to develop a regional hydrogen network and strengthen cooperation across the North Sea.

Energy Transition Norway (ETN) is the only Norwegian partner in TH2ISTLE, a new EU-funded project establishing Scotland’s first mainland Small Hydrogen Valley. The project brings together 28 international organisations to develop a regional hydrogen network and strengthen cooperation across the North Sea.
The project kick off was in Aberdeen on 3rd November 2026, where ETN was represented by Hege Anglevik.
TH2ISTLE aims to connect existing and planned green hydrogen production sites in North East Scotland through tube-trailer deliveries and strategically located refuelling stations, in other words, linking places where green hydrogen is produced with places where it will be used.
The network will support 16 end-use applications across transport, industry, agriculture and energy, demonstrating how hydrogen can reduce emissions in sectors that are difficult to electrify.

Hydrogen valleys are geographically defined ecosystems that connect hydrogen production, distribution and use across sectors. They serve as demonstration projects to develop hydrogen markets, test technologies and build knowledge that can be shared across regions.
ETN will act as a replication partner in TH2ISTLE, transferring knowledge and experience from Scotland to Norwegian hydrogen initiatives, including HyCoast, an initiative led by ETN and NORCE to establish a hydrogen valley on the west coast of Norway, centred in Rogaland and Vestland.
Our role in the TH2iSTLE project includes assessing how Scottish solutions can be adapted infrastructure and industry needs in Norway, while connecting Norwegian businesses with project partners to explore maritime hydrogen applications and cooperation across the North Sea.
For ETN, participation thus offers an opportunity to strengthen our own work with HyCoast, expand international collaboration and help our member companies explore new hydrogen applications and partnerships abroad.
Beyond infrastructure development, the TH2iSTLE project will focus on skills, public engagement and digital tools, including a regional hydrogen digital twin to model and analyse the network.
The project also aims to generate practical insights that can support the development of similar hydrogen valleys across Europe.
TH2ISTLE is funded by the European Commission through the Clean Hydrogen Partnership under HORIZON-JU-CLEANH2-2025.
