In a step towards fostering international collaboration in the energy transition, Energy Transition Norway recently travelled to Aberdeen to met with key representatives in Equinor UK and Net Zero.

The primary objective of the trip was to explore potential partnerships centered around energy security and the advancement of renewable energy technology.

The delegation was initiated by Stavanger Municipality and headed by Stavanger Mayor Sissel Knutsen Hegdal and advisor and opportunity developer Birger Haraldseid.

Energy Transition Norway was represented by CEO Egil Aanestad, cluster board chair Tor Arnesen, and head of the cluster's technical committee, Oddvar Skjæveland, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts between public and private entities in driving energy transition initiatives.

In meeting with Equinor, the ETN delegation got an introduction of Equinor’s activities in the UK sector.

Later, at the Net Zero Technology Centre's offices, Egil Aanestad presented Go Radical P&A (GRaPA) - one of ETN's industry projects - which aims to discover radical solutions that can significantly reduce the cost, time, and environmental impact of P&A.

Much like ETN, Net Zero is a not-for-profit organisation working with industry, academia, and government, driving technology innovation to accelerate the energy transition. The Norwegian Government’s urgency of finding radically more efficient solutions related to the decommissioning of thousands of empty wells, aligns well with that of the British’.

Only three days after the initial meeting, representatives from Net Zero reconvened with their counterparts in ETN and joined Equinor, TotalEnergies, and Repsol in Stavanger to explore radical R&D opportunities for P&A by taking part in the Danish Offshore Technology Centre's 2023/2024 Radical Innovation Sprint process.

It became evident that a collaboration could pave the way for transformative changes in the industry, and a formalization of a pan-North Sea alliance between ETN, Net Zero and the Danish Offshore Technology Centre is under development.

During the trip to Aberdeen, ETN and City of Stavanger also got an introduction of Equinor’s activities in the UK sector.
