Go Radical P&A

Radical Solutions for oil and gas well plugging

P&A

Technology concept/solution:
Go Radical P&A aims to deliver radically new technical solutions that will enable a step change reduction (>50%) in the environmental footprint and cost to perform the plugging of oil and gas wells worldwide, while ensuring the prevention of longer-term leakage from abandoned wells. The project seeks collaboration with radical thinkers across multiple sectors on a global scale, and it is anticipated that the practical solution will take the form of a “toolbox” of solutions, whereby any plugging project could select the relevant “tools” to support their specific project.

The project management team believes that the concept will take the form of some kind of partnership, comprising several technical solutions and operational service providers, that would work together collaboratively to deliver a package/toolbox of solutions and services for future plugging operations. Typical focus areas include, but are not limited to, wellbore access techniques, barrier/plugging solutions, barrier placement techniques, barrier verification techniques, and relevant operational services. Ideally, the delivery of lightweight/small footprint surface support packages could allow lower cost P&A scope execution, including the testing and qualification of new radical downhole P&A solutions. In addition to actual downhole technical solutions, the Go Radical P&A team believes it will be necessary to deliver an alternative Risk-Based P&A design verification process and corresponding Risk Acceptance Criteria to enable the application of more radical technical solutions.

The project is adopting Equinor’s business improvement process “Go Radical”, with the aim of driving radical thinking to deliver radical solutions.
